Profile

My primary clinical interests are in brief psychodynamic psychotherapy incorporating the use of hypnosis, and applied positive psychology. I am greatly influenced by attachment theory, the Individual Psychology of Alfred Adler, and the brief strategic therapy techniques of Milton Erickson and his successors such as Jay Haley and Stephen Lankton. I also have experience in the use of mindfulness and mentalization based treatments.

I am currently completing my doctoral dissertation research at the Adler School of Professional Psychology.

Practicum Training Experience

Chicago Lakeshore Hospital, Valeo Intensive Outpatient Unit, Chicago, IL, 2008-2009
Pre-Doctoral Psychotherapy Practicum (813 hours)
Supervised by Kevin Osten, Psy.D., Licensed Clinical Psychologist
The unit provides intensive, 5-day per week outpatient treatment to mentally ill substance abusers who identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgendered. Clients are highly diverse in terms of age, race, ethnicity, socioeconomic background, and level of functioning. Average treatment duration is 3 weeks, and includes daily 3-hour group sessions as well as weekly 1-hour individual sessions. Psychiatric and case management services are also provided on site.

  • Conducted individual and group psychotherapy for clients with a wide variety of clinical presentations, including a high percentage of serious mental illness, survivors of childhood abuse, and Axis II symptoms.
  • Used mind-body techniques including mindfulness meditation, relaxation, and visualization to alleviate patients’ symptoms of drug and alcohol withdrawal, anxiety disorders, and discomfort related to Axis III conditions.
  • Collaborated with a multidisciplinary team (psychologists, counselors, social workers, and nurses) to develop consistent, ongoing treatment plans for each patient throughout the week.
  • Participated in ongoing training in the integration of twelve-step program participation into outpatient substance abuse treatment. Gained proficiency in substance abuse counseling and the provision of concurrent treatment for mental illness and substance abuse.
  • Was responsible for managing the unit two days each week. This included conducting intake evaluations, psychosocial evaluations, and exit interviews; working with patients to develop realistic and attainable treatment goals; managing scheduled drug testing procedures; and developing integrative daily group treatment plans for patient groups ranging from 2 to 15 patients with high turnover.
  • Took part in weekly training workshops provided in collaboration with two other nearby training sites. Sessions focused on the effects of diversity and individual differences on clinical presentation and treatment planning. Topics included clinical issues in gay and bisexual youth, developmental issues in middle-aged gay and lesbians individuals, treatment considerations for pre- and post-operative transgender individuals, and the interactions between race and sexual orientation.

St. Joseph Hospital, Diamond Headache Clinic Inpatient Unit, Chicago, IL, 2007-2008
Pre-Doctoral Psychodiagnostic Practicum (860 hours)
Supervised by Lawrence Cull, Psy.D., Licensed Clinical Psychologist
The unit provides comprehensive, integrative inpatient treatment for sufferers of severe chronic headache pain. This population has high rates of psychological comorbidity and substance abuse, particularly overuse of prescription pain medications. In addition to complete medical care, the unit offers integrated psychiatric services, psychological assessment, individual and group psychotherapy, psychoeducation workshops, biofeedback, dietary planning, physical therapy, and massage therapy.

  • Completed more than 200 intake assessments utilizing a 30-90 minute unstructured biopsychosocial interview and an objective measure, the Behavioral Health Inventory 2 (BHI-2). Provided feedback and treatment recommendations to patients, and utilized motivational interviewing techniques to encourage participation in outpatient psychotherapy.
  • Completed 8 psychometric testing batteries utilizing the WAIS-IV, Rorschach, TAT, Sentence Completion, Projective Drawings, Beck Depression Inventory, Beck Anxiety Inventory, and Behavioral Health Inventory II (BHI-2).
  • Collaborated with the unit’s full multidisciplinary team to coordinate treatments and better understand patient’s physical, social, and emotional needs.
  • Led weekly psychoeducation and psychotherapy groups focusing on the interactions between mind and body. Groups included cognitive-behavioral interventions, relaxation, visualization, and mindfulness meditation training.

The AIDS Foundation of Chicago, Chicago, IL, 2006
Pre-Doctoral Community Psychology Practicum (250 hours)

The foundation’s purpose is to collaborate with community organizations to develop and improve HIV/AIDS services; to fund and coordinate prevention, care, and advocacy projects; and to champion effective, compassionate HIV/AIDS policy.

  • Compiled a database of research on the relationship between methamphetamine use and the spread of STDs within the gay community. Helped to translate this research into more psychologically informed community outreach efforts.
  • Participated in regular international teleconferences of the International Rectal Microbicides Working Group aimed at supporting the development of safe, effective, and affordable rectal microbicides.
  • Helped to provide legislative advocacy training workshops to individuals affected by HIV/AIDS in order to empower them to effectively communicate their needs to state legislators.

Technical Consultant to the Editorial Board
The American Journal of Clinical Hypnosis is a peer-reviewed journal published by the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis.

  • Provide consultation regarding the online presentation of journal content for non-subscribers. Helped to develop a protocol whereby journal abstracts are made available to the public through the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis web site.
  • Helped develop a method whereby Journal citations are strategically added to public information sites such as Wikipedia in order to increase the general public knowledge and regard for the scientific status of clinical hypnosis. Currently utilizing this method on an ongoing basis.

ACHA is a student-led organization dedicated to advancing students’ awareness and knowledge in the area of clinical hypnosis.

  • Helped to set an agenda for regular lectures, workshops, and practice sessions to be offered through ACHA for the 2010-2011 academic year.
  • Developed and initiated plans for ACHA members to offer free relaxation, mindfulness, and self-hypnosis training sessions at a local hospital.

  • Assisted in the formation of ACHA as a new approved student organization at the Adler school.

Adler Student Association (ASA) Wellness Committee, 2007-2008
Co-Chair
ASA is the primary student government organization at the Adler School of Professional Psychology. It is responsible for facilitating communication between students and school administration, and for fostering community among students. The Wellness Committee is responsible for enhancing students’ access to healthcare and increasing their opportunities to practice appropriate self-care.

  • Proposed the formation of a Wellness Committee to ASA leadership and authored the original charter for the committee.
  • Worked to improve psychological conditions for Adler students by improving students’ abilities to communicate their needs to administration. Helped organize several community meetings for Adler students to voice their hopes and concerns, and presented findings from these meetings to the school’s administration.

CSCH is the Chicago component section of the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis. The workshop was offered to healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, dentists, and chiropractors. The workshop was held over two weekends, with 23 CEUs approved by the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis.

  • Co-designed the workshop curriculum CSCH President Edward Frischholz, Ph.D., ABPH according the ASCH Standards of Clinical Training. Structured the curriculum to facilitate data collection and analysis for empirical validation of the workshop’s educational procedures.
  • Taught participants the principles of hypnotic induction and realerting.
  • Supervised individual and small group practice of hypnotic induction, assessment, treatment formulation, and intervention techniques.
